Description

Nestled between the foothills of the Green Mountains and the Connecticut River, the Hartness House Inn was built in 1903 by former Governor and Inventor, James Hartness. The estate has 40 beautifully decorated rooms on 32 acres of land with landscaped gardens.

About the Hartness House Inn

The Hartness House is one of the most unique country inns in the United States. Its reputation as a historical place is, in fact, world-wide. This is due entirely to the genius of James Hartness. More than 100 years ago Mr. and Mrs. James Hartness lived in this house, enjoying life in a community made famous his technical achievements.

Built in 1904 at a cost of $39,450 by James Hartness as a family home, the house is an example of Newport shingle and stone architecture, rarely found in this part of New England. Complementing the main building is a unique stone tea house in the backyard.
