ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:
Ken Jones is the Economic Research Analyst at the Agency of Commerce and Community Development (ACCD) for the State of Vermont. While he has only been in the position for three years, it is a continuation of his career in using information to promote public policy decision-making. Prior to ACCD, Ken was the Policy Analyst at the Department of Taxes and prior to that, he ran a nonprofit organization for fifteen years that supported state government agency management and policy making. Ken received university degrees in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Public Policy.
In his current job, Ken works with Departments and Divisions within ACCD that promote tourism, manufacturing, housing, and community development activities in the State of Vermont. Ken has been the primary author of Vermont’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy and the most recent Benchmark Study on the economic impacts of Tourism on the Vermont economy. In addition to his work for the State, Ken is a past Chair of the Montpelier Planning Commission and currently serves on the Montpelier School Board and the Montpelier Energy Advisory Committee which oversees the expansion of the wood fired heat plant in Montpelier to become the region’s first municipally operated district heat utility. Ken lives in Montpelier with his wife and three children, although two of them have fled from the nest and the third is chomping at the bit to follow them.
Steven Cook is a resident of Montpelier and was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Tourism & Marketing in September 2006. Since then Cook was also assigned as Publisher of the State of Vermont’s official magazine, Vermont Life for a three-year term. Cook has served the State of Vermont for over 10 years. Cook has also worked in Vermont’s ski industry holding sales and promotional positions for both Smugglers’ Notch and Jay Peak ski resorts. Cook is a graduate of Champlain College with a degree in Business Administration, and Johnson State College with a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. Cook currently serves on a number of boards and councils, including the Johnson State College Business and Economics advisory council, the Vermont Travel and Recreation Council, and the Montpelier Downtown Council.
Jeffrey Lewis retired in 2013 after 8 years as executive director of BDCC, the regional development corporation in Windham County. For the last year he has been, with his partner Jennifer Stromsten, working for the Vermont Chamber Foundation on the Vermont Futures Project with a goal of invigorating the Vermont economy through research and policy innovation. Prior to retiring to Vermont 13 years ago he was, in reverse order, Chief Customer Officer of Monster.com, senior consultant with Patricia Seybold Group in Boston, technology manage and strategist at Phoenix Life Insurance, and a practicing parish minister. From all those emerged a passionate interest in economic development as a community undertaking requiring a wide variety of skills from research to diplomacy, including real estate management, finance, politics, and survival.
