1. How did you get started in your profession?
I got into photography while in college, while studying mass communication at UNH. At the same time, I developed an interest in public media – I became an avid consumer of independent, public media, but I also realized I wanted to be involved with the production of it. I really wanted to be creating media, ideally images, for a public media organization. I pictured myself moving to Ireland to work at RTE (Irish public broadcasting) and raising sheep. After interning at a major news affiliate in the Boston market, I ended up working at a local origination cable TV station in Portsmouth, NH, which led to a volunteer position at New Hampshire Public Television. There was a lot of working for free and grinding it out during that time. This path led me to the world of community access TV.
Okemo Valley TV began as “LPCTV” in 2001 as a public, educational, & government access television organization. That name came from the first letters of the 3 Towns that the organization was originally designated to – Ludlow, Plymouth, and Cavendish. Since that time, the organization has grown and involved, both in terms of their mission and reach. So in 2016 they changed their name to Okemo Valley TV. From its humble beginnings in the Ludlow Elementary School building, they have grown into a vibrant community media organization, running two 24 hour/7 days a week cable TV channels, their website as well as multiple social media channels.
