Six Loose Ladies – Chamber Member of the Month
Suellen Slater of SIX LOOSE LADIES of Chester was recently selected as the Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce (OVRCC) March 2019 Member of the Month. Six Loose Ladies is a cooperative shop run and staffed entirely by volunteers. Since they are an eclectic crew, they have a wide range of fibers and tools for knitters, crocheters, spinners, weavers, and felters. They also carry all of their own personal favorite brands of yarn as well as many produced by local fiber farmers, spinners, and dyers.
How did Six Loose Ladies Start?
Why? Because sometimes you have to create the shop you wish you had, so that’s what we did! We started as a non-profit organization, the Fiber Arts in Vermont but our members really wanted to open our own shop.
Where did this interesting name come from?
We were having a meeting with 6 of our members at one of the ladies homes trying to come up with a name. The hostess husband overheard us and said “you’re a bunch of loose ladies, I’m sure you can come up with something!”
When did the shop open?
It originally opened in 2007 in Proctorsville then moved to Chester 3 years ago. We are located right of the town green.
What sort of products do you sell & who makes them?
We have lots of hats, mittens, scarfs, sweaters, etc. We showcase a range of fiber art products and hand spun yard. We work with a number of consigners selling their products for them. We work with about 20 of them and also help to promote these talented fiber artists.
Do you offer other services?
We have many fiber arts classes in knitting, crocheting, felting, weaving, & spinning, etc. Twice a week we have “Sit & Knit” morning gatherings with goodies baked by our volunteers. Thursday evenings we have an open house with a variety of visiting fiber artists who share their crafting expertise.
What is “Benjamin” the Greeters role?
We are a dog friendly business! We have a jar of dog treats and even keep a water bowl outside during the summer months for visiting canines.
What about your business would surprise others if they knew?
We are an all volunteer organization. Suellen is the President, Perry is the treasurer and Nancy is the shop manager. The Fiber Arts of Vermont is our parent organization with 25 members. About a dozen help with the shop.
