Rockledge Farm Woodworks Chamber Member of the Month
Scott Duffy of Rockledge Farm Woodworks of Weathersfield was recently selected as the Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce (OVRCC) February 2019 Member of the Month. Rockledge Farm Woodworks is a small, family operated business where converted barns are used as workshops, office, storage, a Gallery and some livestock is even on the farm! By virtue of either the distinctive wood selected, or by the unique design utilized, (or both), every piece of work that is crafted is a “One-of-a-Kind”, “One-at-a-Time”, hand crafted heirloom.
How did you get to own/operate Rockledge Farm Woodworking?
Our family has a heritage of woodworking here at Rockledge Farm. For generations we have operated a business from the Farm producing among other things, wood furniture. Today three generations of the family work in our shops, located on our 200 year old “hill farm” near our family’s original 1700’s settlement. Scott and son Ian run the wood shop with several assistants, wives Kathleen and Jessica fill important roles, and the grandchildren are now helping out!
What’s your biggest business challenge and what do you enjoy most about the work you do?
As we literally “live where we work”, our greatest challenge is separating our personal lives from our work. I derive the most pleasure in the diversity of the work we do—from creating truly unique furnishings for our clients from local figured hardwoods and slabs, to designing new accessories for the home—I am constantly challenged creatively.
How long have you been a chamber member and what role does the chamber have with your business?
We have been Chamber members for 10 (I believe) years. Chamber membership has been an integral part of our marketing, connecting our business to visitors to the area, and second home owners. It has also served as a business referral point, connecting us to other area businesses and resources.
What about you would surprise others if they knew?
I have never had formal training in the work we do. Rather I have been inspired by the forests around us here in Vermont. For us as woodworkers the quality and beauty of the wood we use always comes first. We create unique furniture for every room of the home and office from sustainably harvested, hand-selected hardwoods and Burls native to this area. It is important for us to work with other professionals in the local forest products industry, loggers, foresters, suppliers, mills and timberland owners–”Local Wood, Local Good”
